Phosphorus Runoff Risk Evaluator (PRRE)
Supports EQIP including CNMP
Nutrient management is an important part of NRCS conservation planning,
particularly in the development of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans
(CNMP) for livestock operations. Farmers can obtain cost-share funding through
the EQIP program to implement these plans, in accordance with the
NRCS Nutrient Management
Standard 590 (NRCS-USDA eFOTG) and ensure that manure is applied in a manner
that benefits crop production without degrading natural resources or increasing
water pollution risks.
Assessing the risk of phosphorus pollution from a given field or fields is one
of the first steps in nutrient management planning. However, mainland tools and
indices do not adequately model phosphorus behavior in tropical soils,
particularly andisols (volcanic soils) and highly weathered soils (oxisols and
ultisols). So PRRE, a local phosphorus risk assessment tool was developed by the
University of Hawaii, in cooperation with Hawaii NRCS staff under the auspices
of the TTC to address this issue in the tropics. PRRE is a stand-alone
Windows-based computer decision support system that uses field-specific
information to develop a phosphorus pollution risk rating. It also provides
suggested management options for the landowner/manager.
